DBQ

Non-violence works by not attacking or retaliating against the person/group that is persecuting you. Non-violence is the best solution.

Non-violent methods work and is the best way to "fight" for your rights.

-From the movie, Gandhi and many of his supporters marched down to the ocean to collect their own salt (The Salt March). It was illegal for the people of Indian decent to collect their own salt. Salt had to be bought. In document D, it is stated that the Salt Tax Law made it illegal for Indians to collect their own salt and many historians consider the Salt March the turning point of the movement to free India from British control.

-In document F, it says that any method should be used as long as it works. It also says that "the state was far more powerful than we, and any attempts at violence by us would be devastatingly crushed. This made nonviolence a practical necessity rather than an option." The fact that any government has the power to crush any act of violence because the government needs to protect its country and people. If there were no violence against the state, the government could use violence to end the protest, but that would make them look bad and most likely be the "hot topic" of many other countries. In the movie, a foreign correspondent journalists took note of the protest against the British and how the British responded to the protest in front of the Dharasana Salt Works. According to document G, the Indian people were slowly walking towards the front entrance, and were beat down by the British police. The British attacked them with steel-shods and struck the advancing men at the head. "At times the spectacle of unresisting men being methodically bashed into a bloody pulp sickened me so much that I had to turn away." Also in Document M, Gandhi says "Without the newspapers a movement like Satyagraha wouldn't have been possible." The newspapers were how people around the country and the world were able to see what was going on and what kind of injustice the Indian people were enduring.

- In document H, it asks for people to join the non-violent "army." Martin Luther King also asked for people to give up any possible weapon and to use no weapons. "Hundreds of people responded." Also in document I, it states that all the volunteers to the Defiance of Unjust Laws campaign could not retaliate "otherwise they would undermine the value of the entire enterprise. They must respond to violence with nonviolence; discipline must be maintained at all costs." In both these documents, they are encouraging the people not to retaliate no matter what. Document H was at Birmingham, Alabama in April, 1963. Document I was at Johannesburg, South Africa in April, 1952. If non violence didn't work then how did two similar things occur in two different parts of the world and with a time frame of 11 years?

-In document B, a boycott method was used. The boycott was for the buses. This non-violent method works because many African Americans used the buses as their main mode of transportation and because many African Americans lived in America, it damaged the economy in Montgomery, Alabama. With the boycott, the government could not force the protesters to uses buses and could not do much about it. This was an affective way to get the governments attention.

Rights Questions

1. My right is the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated; and no Warrants shall issue but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and or persons or things to be seized. (The Fourth Amendment)

2. This right exists because it was taken as a protection. The American colonists were being invaded by the British Government. The colonists felt that their privacy was being invaded. The British officials were able to conduct searches the homes of private citizens by "writs of assistance". The British did this mainly because it was a way to discover if anyone was in violation of the strict British customs law. Because of this the Founding Fathers saw the threat to individual liberty and privacy. There was a case (Semayne’s Case) in 1603, where it recognized the right of the homeowner to defend his house against unlawful entry
even by the King’s agents. Although it recognized the right, it also recognized the power of the officers to invade the suspects home upon notice to arrest or to execute the King's process.

3. Exercising this right means to be able to live without fear of the government coming into your house and taking what they please. It also means being able to exercise your first amendment right without fear of being taken into custody by the government because of what you have said. Another way to exercise this right, is to be able to take electronic devices on planes.

4. Some limitations on the Fourth Amendment is that it in recent decades, there has been growing concerns regarding crime and public safety in America and because of it growing concerns have forced the Courts in American to balance the privacy rights contained in the Constitution. Since the needs of law-enforcement officers is expanding to investigate and arrest dangerous criminals. As a result of the expanding needs, the Constitution's prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures had to be cut-down a bit. They also had to be fixed to suit the needs of modern law enforcement as to fight against drugs and terrorism. Because of all of this, it is important for the citizens to be familiar with the police's authority to conduct searches, and all of the legal doctrines that limits the authority of the government. The Patriot Act passed by President Bush, basically gets rid of the Fourth Amendment. The Patriot Act enhances surveillance. It allows the government to "the interception of wire, oral, and electronic communications for the production of evidence of: (1)specified chemical weapons or terrorism offenses; and (2) computer fraud and abuse." (http://members.tripod.com/~warrior69/id144.htm) In section 209, it permits the seizure of voice-mail messages under a warrant. In section 106 it "Modifies provisions relating to presidential authority under the International Emergency Powers Act to: (1) authorize the President, when the United States is engaged in armed hostilities or has been attacked by a foreign country or foreign nationals, to confiscate any property subject to U.S. jurisdiction of a foreign person, organization, or country that he determines has planned, authorized, aided, or engaged in such hostilities or attacks(the rights to which shall vest in such agency or person as the President may designate); and (2) provide that, in any judicial review of a determination made under such provisions, if the determination was based on classified information such information may be submitted to the reviewing court ex parte and in camera."(http://members.tripod.com/~warrior69/id144.htm) There is more at that website.

5. All these limitations exists because of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The Patriot Act was issued to try to prevent terrorist attacks and to keep the country safe from possible danger.

6. If I had to give up the Fourth Amendment, I would like to be able to take back the things taken from the government if I am proven inoccent. If that is not possible I would like to be able to live a life where the government isnt constantly keeping track of my life.

NASA

This source is credible

The source doesnt say directly that the tilting of the Earth effects the amount of CO2 on the Earth. But it does talk about the relation with the tilting of the Earth and the amount of CO2

I do believe this source

I believe this source because it is from NASA. NASA is a trustworthy company.

G. Holzer

Credentials not found

The source is moslty credible

The source does not directly say that the tilt of the Earth effects the amount of CO2 in Earth but it talks about the relationship of the amount of sunlight and seasons on Earth.

I believe this source

I believe this source because it gives a lot of information, links, graphs, and time periods.

Overall I do believe this fact because in all these sources, they all say that the Earth's tilt has a direct relationship the the seasons. Which means that during some seasons, more less CO2 is taken in by plants because some parts of the world has less plant life than other parts.

Fact 4

The CO2 can get trapped in ice.

National Snow and Ice Data Center

A national website

This source confirms the fact

I believe this source

I believe this source because it shows you the references, gives data and once again it is a National site for snow and ice.

Overall I do believe this fact because in all the sites that I have found and read, they all use the measurement of CO2 in the ice to see how old it is. Also because they all bassically say the same thing, that the CO2 in the ice can determine how old the ice is and how long its been in there. With that it is easy to infer that CO2 can be trapped in ice.

Fact 3

Hottest it ever got was in 2005

Conflict Questions

1. Palestine got involved mostly because of land issues. When the Ottoman Empire came to an end, Britian took over. Later Britian gave some land to the Zionist and Jews.
2. Palestine wanted their land back from the Isralies, given to the Isralies by Great Britian. Great Britian attempted to control immigration of the Jewish people. The Palestines saw this and got involved with the immigration. For negotiations, Palestine wanted the land at the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Of course the Israelies did not like this and tried to demilitarize the Palestines. There has been negotiations to bring peace between the two countries but that has not been working. They have been fighting ever since and continues to fight one another.
3. The Jewish people in Israel is the Palestine's enemy because they were fighting for rights over the land. The United States and Great Britian is also an enemy to the Palestines because those two countries adided Israel.
4. Most of the Middle East are friendly with Palestine. They are friendly because they are Muslim. Countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria.
5. Palestine wants to become independent, have their land and maintain peace.
6. There is nothing that Palestine would give up.
7. Palestine would not give anything up, they dont believe they need too. It was their land before so they believe they should get it back.

Reflection Post

1. I learned new things about Greek and Japanese mythology. Such as the creation myths of Greek mythology and Japanese mythology.
2. My research question was “Where did Greek mythology originate from and how did it come to be?” And the main question was, "How does Greek mythology compare to Japanese mythology?"
3. Greek mythology originated from the Mycenaean, on the Greek mainland, and the Minoan, on the nearby island of Crete, and from Roman mythology. Greek mythology is similar to Japanese mythology because of where the temples were located and the similar myth about the magical snake monster.
4. Yes
5. It answered it because in the video, we explained the origins of the mythology and at then end we compared the two mythologies.
6. We found good information and was able to put together the video nicely.
7. I could have improved on adding effects to the video.\
8. I would have changed the sound levels of my voice in the recording.
9. I would change the amount of research needed. I worked over the weekends and still was on a tight schedule with the project.
10. I think we deserve an A- because comparing Greek mythology to Japanese mythology was harder than we expected but we were still able to do so, but not as much as we had wanted.

Script

Greek mythology is traced back to two civilizations that flourished in 1100 B.C.
These two civilizations were the Mycenaean, on the Greek mainland, and the Minoan, on the nearby island of Crete. The Greek myths and legeneds were passed down by telling them orally. It was not until city-states arose, they were beginning to write them down. These works are of Hesiod and Homer, they are the key sources of Greek mythology which dates back around 700 B.C.

http://www.mythencyclopedia.com/Go-Hi/Greek-Mythology.html

The main Olympians are Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, Hephaestus. But before the Olympians, there were the Titans.
http://www.greekmythology.com/

The Titans were children of Gaea (mother Earth) and Uranus (the embodiment of the Sky and the Heavens) Gaea gave birth to a main Titan known as Cronus.
Gaea and Uranus warned Cronus that one day, one of his children will overpower him. To prevent this from happening, Cronus decided to swallow all of his children. Gaea was greatly displeased with this, so one day when Rhea (Cronus’s wife) gave birth to the youngest son, Zeus; Gaea wrapped a stone in cloth and gave it to Cronus to swallow. Cronus swallowed the stone thinking that it was Zeus. Gaea was able to then send Zeus to Crete, and there he was raised. Zeus returned and there was immediate conflict between Zeus and Cronus. Cronus did not realize that Zeus was his son. Zeus could not defeat the giant on his own and needed the help of his brothers and sisters inside Cronus. Zeus was able to give Cronus a potion which made him throw up his first five children, Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon. With their help, Zeus was able to take down Cronus and Cronus was sent down to live in Tartarus, the Dark World under the Earth. With Cronus out of the way, Zeus made himself supreme god of all. Zeus then married his sister, Hera.

http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/europe/greek/articles.html

Even with Hera as his wife, he had many affairs. The result of one affair was the birth of a great hero, Hercules. Hercules was the son of Zeus and Alcmene.

http://www.igreekmythology.com/hercules.html

Hera hated Hercules and did whatever she could to make his life miserable.
Once Hercules grew older, he married Megara and had five children. With Hera’s hate for Hercules, she sent a curse on Hercules which filled him with rage. Hercules ended up killing his children and his wife because of the rage sent by Hera. Realizing what he had done, Hercules was told by Apollo to serve the king of Mycenae. The king was lead by Hera and assigned Hercules 10 Labors to be forgiven. Two of the Labors the king did not count and the labors were named the 12 Labors.

http://www.greek-gods.info/greek-heroes/heracles/index2.php

One of the 12 Labors was to slay the Lernaean Hydra. The Lernaean Hydra was a monster that lived in Lake Lerna of Argos. With nine heads that multiplied as it was decapitated, and poisonous breath, Hercules was able to defeat the monster with the help of his nephew Iolaus. The king however was not impressed with this feat and did not count the slaying of the Lernaean Hydra because Iolaus had helped him slay the monster.

http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Herakles/hydra.html

The Greek myths are part of the Greek religion. The ancient Greek practices are conservative in nature, and they never had a single guiding work of literature like the Christian bible or the Jewish Torah. Sanctuaries were built to the Gods as a place for worship and sacrifices. The temples were built in according to the God’s nature. For example, a temple that was built for the god of the sea, Poseidon, was built were there was a good view of water on three sides. Sacrifices were made to the Gods for gifts and for favors. The main ritual act was an animal sacrifices, mostly oxen, goats and sheep. The animals were sacrificed usually within the front of the temple and at an altar. The meat of the sacrificed animal was eaten by assembled participants. Throughout the year, religious festivals were held, they were literally feast days. Out of all these festivals, the four most famous festivals contained each individual procession, athletic competitions, and sacrifices. They were held every four years at Olympia, Delphi, Nemea, and Isthmia.

http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/grlg/hd_grlg.htm

Greek mythology has many myths, which they all relate to the Gods in Olympus. Although there were no main literature which explained the practices and myths, Greek mythology survived many years.

-Today I was supposed to work on my script for the project.
-I worked on my script for my project and was able to finish the introduction. Ive also started to list the Olympians.
-Today's work will help me with my project because, the introduction is what I have the most difficulty with. Since the introduction is out of the way, the rest of the script will be easier to type out and Ill be able to work quickly and efficiently.
-Next class I plan to work on the script some more and get the two body paragraphs out of the way. (Explaining the creation of the Gods, and some of the myths.)

Status Report

-So far, I was able to finish all my notecards, find a lot of sites for information, and posted 8 daily progress posts.
-I have to write the script of the video, put the project together, combine Ben's project to mine, and check for any errors.
-Finding video clips that I could use is very difficult.
-If I was to start over again, I would work more on the weekends too so that I will get ahead and be comfortable where the project is.
-I technically dont have to get anything done before spring break, other than my 10th daily progress post. I do hope to start my script and finish it.

Monday, March 2, 2009

Daily Progress Post (8)

-I found out what was the next step in my project, which is to make a script of the video, citing the information as I go.
-I just read through some of the sites I have saved/found to see what is the most logical way to start the video project/script.
-This will help me to get further in my project because it will be easier once I have decided how I will start it. Once I figured it out, I can write the script easily and possibly start working on the video.
-Next class I hope to start the script. Possibly finishing it (I dont believe I could)

Product Prospectus

Product Prospectus

1. The main topic is differences in the origins of Japanese and Greek mythology. My research question is “Where did Greek mythology originate from and how did it come to be?”

2. The final product will be made from Windows Movie Maker. It will be in a form of a documentary using pictures and possibly some video clips found online.3. We (Ben and I) have chosen this way to present the project because we could easily work on it at home without having to be with each other and also because it seemed the most appropriate way to present the ideas and information.4. The finished project will be in a video format and it will be comparing Greek and Japanese mythology. There will be two different sections, one for Greek and one for Japanese mythology. At the end of the video, comparisions will be made.

5. The project demonstrates mastery because finding video clips that is related to the topic is difficult. Not only that but also the amount of research and information needed to make the project informative and accurate. Comparing two very different countries to find similarites and differences in mythology is a challenge.

6. Task breakdown/work flow of project
-Find individual cites (research)
-Extract the information needed from cites
-When information is extracted, make the index cards (which go with the research)
-Find video clips online that we could use. (if possible)
-Find pictures related to the information found
-Compile both the video clips (if any) and pictures with our voices over the video.
-Add partner’s project into my own
-Edit/check for errors
-Turn in final project

7. Next actions to be taken on this project is to find information, do the index cards, daily posts and start to extract important information.

Daily Progress Post (Day 2)

-needed to answer some questions on the Product Prospectus and save another website on delicious for information
-Answered questions on product prospectus 1-3. Talked about how to split the work, the main topic questions and our individual topic questions.
-Being able to find the information and plan out our actions will make it easier to do the project itself. One of the questions Ive answered on the Product Prospectus asks how the final product will look like. Answering that questions gives us an idea how it should look like when the project is finished.
-My next action is to continue to find more sites on my topic, answer some more questions, and to get the information and put it together. (just taking some notes)

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Daily Progress Post (Day 1)

-was told to make blog spot for daily progress posts, make account on delicious.com for research and note cards.
